The first thing I did once the Melbourne Lockdown Restrictions were eased was to go into the city armed with my sketchbook and camera. It was the most beautiful summer day and I headed to the laneways, expecting to see the usual crowds of people. However it was eerily quiet, just another solitary figure walking towards Federation Square. What I did notice were the plants placed in buckets secured with ‘fragile’ tape along the walls. The plants were like extra beacons encouraging people to return to the city, full of hope and joy. I have painted this painting with bright, fresh colours to reflect Melbourne’s new beginnings after a shocking year. Life happily goes on.
